How often are mortgages denied?

Read the denominator before comparing denial rates.

Rate Editorial · 2026-09-10 · September 10, 2026

Here, denial rate is denied applications divided by originated plus denied applications. Withdrawn applications, incomplete files and loans approved but not accepted are excluded.

Lenders serve different borrowers and markets. A higher denial share alone does not establish unfair treatment. Denial reasons can include debt-to-income ratio, credit history and collateral, and multiple reasons may be recorded.
